Yamaha TZR125 Used Parts Guide: OEM Take-Offs, Repair Tips & Where to Buy

Yamaha TZR125 Used Parts Guide: OEM Take-Offs, Repair Tips & Where to BuyStill riding a Yamaha TZR125? Or maybe you’re trying to bring an old bike back to life?
One of the biggest headaches, without a doubt, is this: where the hell do you find parts?

This bike has been around since the ’90s, and even though it’s long discontinued, there are still tons of riders keeping it alive — for nostalgia, for the thrill, or just for love. But here’s the problem:
OEM new parts are either sold out, insanely expensive, or full of fakes online.
And as for aftermarket parts — let’s be honest — many of them look good on the outside, but once you install them, issues start popping up fast.

That’s why, if you’re serious about keeping your TZR125 running well, OEM take-off parts (a.k.a. used parts from scrapped bikes) are something you should seriously consider.

What are take-off parts? And how are they different from aftermarket parts?

Take-off parts are simply original parts removed from scrapped bikes.

But don’t let the word “used” fool you.
A lot of aftermarket parts may look shiny and brand new, but plenty of them start causing problems within just a few months.
Take-off parts, on the other hand, aren’t brand new — but they’re factory originals, fit perfectly, and are often more reliable than cheap copies.

Key advantages of OEM take-off parts:

  • Factory-made, perfect fit – No need to drill, grind, or shim. Just bolt them on and go.

  • Much cheaper than new OEM parts – If you can even find NOS parts, they’re crazy expensive. Take-offs offer OEM quality at a much lower price — and they’re actually available.

  • Tested in real-world conditions – These parts have already proven themselves on the road, not just in a factory or lab.

  • Ideal for restoration, daily use, or collectors – Whether you’re building a show bike or just want reliable riding parts, they’re the smart choice.

So are new parts always better?

Well… it depends on what kind of “new” you’re talking about.

  • 🔴 Genuine OEM parts (brand-new, from the manufacturer) are obviously the best — but most TZR125 parts were discontinued long ago. Even if you find them, the price is often outrageous, and there’s still the risk of counterfeits.

  • 🔴 Aftermarket new parts vary in quality — a lot.
Some are okay, but many just don’t hold up. Especially with things like ignition systems, electronics, or brake components, if tolerances are off even slightly, you’re in trouble.

I’ve seen cases where someone installed an aftermarket CDI. On day one, the bike idled rough. By day two, it wouldn’t even start.
They swapped in a used OEM CDI — and everything went back to normal.

That said, it’s not that all aftermarket parts are bad. Some brands make decent stuff, and depending on the part and your luck, they can be usable. Just don’t expect them to match OEM performance or reliability.

Which parts are worth buying as take-offs?

Not every part is ideal to buy used. But for some key components, take-off parts are the better choice.

Part Type Recommended Why?
Engine assemblies ✅ High High cost, poor aftermarket quality. Used OEM often best option.
Electrical (CDI, coils, wiring) ✅ High Precision matters. Aftermarket failures are common.
Suspension & brakes ✅ Medium-High OEM tuning and materials are better. Aftermarket often less durable.
Body panels, gauges ✅ Medium If undamaged, used OEM parts offer great value.
Wear items (chains, belts) ❌ Not recommended Always go new — safety first.
